Research has revealed that profitability for
swine producers is highly impacted by piglet
birth and weaning weights. Therefore, a key
measure of sow productivity is their ability to produce heavier piglets at both birth
and weaning.
Starting with a healthier, heavier-weight piglet appears to be one of the key factors impacting profitability at market. Research found that an average of 0.5 lb more at weaning was generally worth about $2 per pig at market. However, the financial implications of additional weight on lightweight pigs appear even greater. For instance, an extra pound of weaning weight on a light-weight 7- or 8-lb pig is worth an extra $10 to $12 at market.
BMD fed to sows before farrowing and through lactation is a powerful tool that can help piglets maintain high health status free of clostridial infection, helping them achieve greater body size at weaning so you can optimize your productivity.

BMD is the powerful performance-enhancing feed additive that can dramatically improve growth, efficiency, and health of pigs. When BMD is fed to sows from 2 weeks pre-farrowing through lactation, it controls piglet clostridial enteritis (caused by clostridial pathogens), the leading cause of diarrhea in young pigs. And for grower/finisher pigs, BMD helps limit end-weight variability, helping more pigs hit the target carcass sizes packers demand so marketing income is optimized.
In herds with clinical clostridial enteritis, BMD in sow diets has been shown to reduce the severity of piglet diarrhea by 41%, reduce pre-weaning mortality from 23% down to 2%, and produce piglets 1-lb heavier at weaning.
BMD is perhaps the ideal feed additive for the pork industry because it effectively and economically improves performance and health, has no cross resistance to other antimicrobials, does not contribute to transferable drug resistance, does not disturb the normal gut microflora, is not absorbed from gut, poses no pollution threat to the environment, and is non-toxic to both animals and humans.
